Lets build this!!
Step 1: Measure the width of your bath. Marking where the inside edges start. ( You will need the later for the tub spacers.)
Step 2: Cut all pieces to cut list. (Note: 1-in x 12-in x 4-ft Square Unfinished Pine Board will cover all pieces. Remember the overall size is subject to change because, not all tubs are the same width. This size is based on a standard shower/tub insert.)
Pro Tip: If you don’t have a finishing blade for the circular saw. Apply painters over the area you plan to cut. This will prevent tear out.
Step 3: Now let’s make the spot for a wine glass or drink. Take Board A using the jigsaw and cut a 1 ½” wide and 5” deep. I also used the Multi-tool to cut out the top of the rectangle.
Step 4: Now we are going to take the Rotary tool using the sandpaper attachment. Using this we are going to smooth out the cut out area creating rounded edges.
Step 5: Using a wine glass base a a template. Center the glass to the end of the cut out rectangle we just cut off. Tracing the base around using a pencil.
Step 6: Using the rotary tool and sandpaper attachment sand down the area creating a lip for a cup. About 1 cm deep.
Step 7: Once that is all smooth. Sand all pieces to the finishing smooth of 220g. Leaving the marks you made on the edge in the beginning.
Step 8: Time to assemble! Starting with the bottom tub spacers (Board B). Pre Drill two holes and apply glue to the side that will be touching Board A. Then screw in, make sure to mount these on the side edge of the mark you made.
Step 9: Now flip the board to be resting on the newly mounted Board B. Take Board D center to Board B. Then mark 3” in from the top. Once marked. Pre Drill holes through Board A.
Step 10: From the bottom of Board A screw in screws into Board D.
Step 11: Repeat step 9-10 for Board C. Make sure to aline with Board D. (Here we are making the Tablet/Book Holder.)
Step 12: Add wood filler to any area that needs it. Allow to fully dry.
Step 13: Once wood filler is dry sand completely smooth.
Step 14: (Optional) Let’s add a personal touch! With the Rotary tool Engraving attachments. Add a sweet note to the mother/maternal figure in your life.
Step 15: Add desired stain and allow to dry completely.
Step 16: Apply a polycrylic finish. This makes sure that the board is protected from the moisture while taking a bath. Allow to completely dry.
Pro Tip: Apply at least 3 coats and lightly sanding in between (220g or higher grit). This ensures that the top coat is completely smooth.
Your finished!! Now add a bow and give it to someone the mother in your life!
